Wonky Wheel One Year in Business

Updated: Dec 3, 2020

One Year ago....

How our business has changed since we opened the doors to the customer one year ago on the 4th October 2019. From October last year until end of January our art was just available in our Gallery based in Finchingfield. In January we started the journey of creating our website with the main purpose to showcase some of the artwork available in the Gallery and allow people to book onto events and workshops. Since the end of March with the Gallery closed due to COVID-19 we realised the website needed to contain all our artwork, lots more details such as descriptions and sizes, and information about the artists. And of course, to allow online purchasing.

One thing we did not appreciate was the work involved in taking photographs of stock, both in terms of how long it takes but also how difficult it can be to get colours correct and minimise reflections with glass. But we got there in the end and how have a great library of pictures of all our artwork.

Since we re-opened in June things have been changing and we are so grateful to welcome our lovely customers back into the gallery. We are grateful for them bearing with us with all the changes we had to make in line with the government guidelines that is ever evolving day by day and week by week. The only consolation is that everyone is in the same boat and we will all get through it with time.

In September we started up our popular creative workshops onsite once again, as these are an important service to the local community, bringing a sense of peace and harmony to support mental health and wellbeing. We had a great programme of Workshops pre-lockdown and it was so rewarding to see people arrive all stressed and flushed from their busy lives to then learn a new skill in a relaxing environment and walk away from the workshops all de-stressed. “That gives me great joy.” We have so many interesting workshops to offer all based around Christmas. You can click here to check out further details on each one.

To celebrate Wonky Wheel’s first birthday, we are calling budding artists of all ages to help it to create a community colouring book. The colouring book will showcase designs submitted by members of the community and will be available to buy from the gallery and its website from the 5th December. Profits from the colouring book will be donated to the Freshwell Health Centre, CREAMER Fund, Finchingfield.

Entry to the competition is free and entrants should create their design, drawn in black and white, on the special competition entry form. Entry forms (A4 size) are available now from the Wonky Wheel gallery or on the website

Designs could be, for example: animals, flowers, landscapes, vehicles, geometric shapes or people. The best individual designs will be included in the book. The closing date for the competition is the 15th November 2020.

1) 3 years to 10 years – Prize: Colouring pencils

2) 11 years to 17y ears – Prize: Watercolour paints set

3) 18+. Prize: Learn how to paint and develop drawing skills with local Artist Helen Wiseman*

*Helen Wiseman will also be appearing in the exciting Instagram Live event hosted at Gallery on Friday 2nd October from 6:30pm. Full details of Instagram Live schedule are available by clicking here.

I was asked “why a Creative Colouring Book?”, and the reason for this competition is firstly, for families, grandparents, schools and social clubs to have a fun activity that could be completed together, and secondly artistic skill is not paramount but creativity is. For example inspiration for a design could come from the view from a window, or events in the news, or the new forms of communication now seeming normal.

Finally, the result should be a fun colouring book suitable for all ages and something that everyone can get involved in on a cold wet winters day.

There will be one winner from each category for the best creative design. All entries will be considered for the colouring book. Winners will be announced on the 5th December live from the Gallery on Instagram.

Also to celebrate our first birthday we are hosting Instagram Live session over the weekend of the 2nd October to 4th October, this is a great way for you to get to know the Artists and Makers here at Wonky Wheel. We are going to have chats about their work at Wonky Wheel and host some demonstrations in Watercolour and Porcelain Clay. Please click here to check out the full schedule.

We have even created a special Christmas box of all things handmade for someone special in your life. Click here to see our current Christmas collection and more will be added in the coming weeks.
